My Ego is Not my Amigo

My ego is totally balking at the coach label I gave myself a few weeks ago. I want to do anything and everything other than tell people I am available to do the thing I love to do. What’s up with that?

Ego. Second-guessing, standing in the way of my own good time, fear, a dash of shame, and all the usual suspects like that.

What’s been cool is that a few friends have actually reached out for some actual coaching sessions and they are still my friends and even have said things like, “That was really helpful,” which is like, yay and really the whole point of putting myself out there as officially available for scheduled handholding/cheerleading/facilitating peeps’ inner knowing type togetherness.

I called my sister Rosie, who is very pragmatic/no b.s. and has been encouraging me to do this chat support thing for fifteen or so years. I said, “My dog trainer referred me to her friend who is like a real coach coach and maybe I’ll give her a call.”

Rosie said, “Stop! You don’t need any more anything. Just go do what you do!”

My mother tells a story about when I was 3 years old interviewing for nursery school in Manhattan and they put us in a room and gave all us toddlers a shoelace and a bucket of those big wooden beads with big holes to thread.

Well, apparently I beaded my string fastest (such a high achiever!) and then I went around the room checking in with all the other kids - coaching them - while they strung their beads.

At this point in the story my mother always says, dreamily, “What was so amazing was that Sascha was so sweet and kind to these kids and not at all bossy or commanding.” (Like she is now?)

Historically this story has made me cringe, a lot, on so many levels. However, it’s kinda confining going through life hiding what may be one’s most fulfilling activity.

So if you have a pile of beads and - even though you could string them yourself - you would like a little input or company or secret sauce to make the journey a bit more pleasant, more efficient, give me a call.  I’m gonna keep going.
