No Mud, No Lotus

Even my skeptical not super-worked out peeps know that basically, no pain, no gain when it comes to emotional healing and growth.  We’ve heard the phrases, “feel it to heal it,” “the only way forward is through,” “no mud, no lotus,” and, one of my favorites, “religion is for people scared of hell, spirituality is for people who’ve already been.”

I’ve been fascinated by the climb, crawl, or flight out of the darkness since I can remember. Having found myself in the deepest depths of that hole a few times this lifetime — and pretty darn low countless other times — I’ve devoted myself to the study of how to get out and stay out of the emotional muck.

One secret I’ve learned that’s been helpful is that there will and always will be some emotional mud.  The Instagram persona that is always sunny and happy is not real. Feeling crummy is not a failure, but it’s also not a life sentence, or even a day-long sentence.

With practice and help from others, I have gotten more skillful at noticing when I’m on the shadowy side of the hill, pausing to diagnose what I can do internally or externally to bring in more sunlight and feel better, and then doing those things and having more bandwidth to enjoy what there is to be enjoyed.

To paraphrase someone wiser than I am, “In life pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional.” I’m gonna keep going.
