Siamo Cinque/We are 5!
My BFF Jule and her longtime love/actual husband Fabio arrived last night from Cali. Their first time in Italy, and Ax’s first time too. We hit the Pantheon first, then the Trevi Fountain, then the church of Saint Agnacious. I previewed Piazza Navona but the fountains are covered for restoration so it’s just a big open something too hot to handle. So we crossed the ponte sisto to Trastevere, tromped around, got lost (tradition), and ate. And ate. Also some obscure museum with 2000 year old frescoes and tile-thingys my brain can’t remember.
Jule and Fabio make us a party of five. Bigger taxis, bigger tables, and exponential combinations of desires, bodily needs, ideas about which way to turn, shops to stop in, neighborhoods to explore, gelaterias to grace. Is it time for a meal? A coffee? A gelato? Another museum? We are all disoriented, jet lagged, and out of practice or just plain new to this touring thing post-covid (while somewhat still trying to avoid under-ventilated, crowded spaces, because, well, covid).
Rome is spectacular, even with all that. It is so wonderful to be with friends in this foreign land even though they want to stop in the wrong places and see the wrong things and sleep at the wrong times. Ax has found his favorite street artist - a spray paint “performer” in Campo de Fiori we all watched for what seemed an inordinate amount of time yet not quite long enough for him - along with several photo-worthy graffiti cartoons on the sides of buildings he seems to like more than medieval and renaissance masterpieces.
Kiki is fighting her urge to care for all of us and we are all fighting our urges to care for her. I am taking cleansing breaths and running golden pink energy through my chakras and out to all beings. I am eating all the pasta. I am setting intentions to love and enjoy all, and it’s working. I’m gonna keep going.
