Brownie Love
Our puppy Brownie has become a practically perfect young lady. While once she had us in tears with her nightly yelping and morning nipping and jumping sessions, now she is a champion cuddle companion and all around happy lifeforce. She has us trained. She gets her meals on time. She has her evening rituals, the same way, every day.
She gets treats for coming when called, sitting when asked, eliminating, going to bed, and sometimes just for being her, being fun to have around.
She’s appreciative. She will sit in my lap for hours while I’m on zoom, just below camera (most of the time) head heavy on my thigh, and allow me to pat her while she dozes. Sometimes I will hold her face to mine and kiss her nose and coo lovey baby talk while stroking her face. She seems to like it. She is my soulmate.
Brownie and Mike have a particularly intimate greeting routine that involves her laying on top of him chest to chest while gazing into each other’s eyes as he massages her entire little furry body and says nice things. Her tail wags and circles wildly while the two of them canoodle, enraptured, as if for the first time, every day.
Ax prefers his Brownie bonding in the evening, or at least after breakfast. He catches her on the bed and puts his entire body over hers, covering her completely with his body weight while telling her she’s a good little girl. Brownie’s enthusiastic tail wagging during these moments reveals she is happy happy happy to receive the love of her human brother in the form it’s given.
Ax is her number one these days, she follows him around and greets him like a deity when he enters the room. He accepts it as his due, but always has a kind word or pat session for her.
So that is life with Brownie these days. She prefers daily long off-leash sessions and usually she gets them. She prefers being with humans and usually she gets to be. She still likes treats. But also chasing birds, snuggling, and jam band music, particularly the Grateful Dead. She’s family. I’m gonna keep going.
