Thank You, Europe/Next Stop: Pedis
First, I wasn’t lying when I said I had the courage to show up inappropriately sporty for comfort’s sake. However, it turns out my upcoming trip won’t be the occasion for that.
What happened was, I thought about how cute and per bene my mother was going to look in all her white linen, and about how my son Ax is committed to #tiedyealways, and I decided to give ladylike a whirl, for the team.
My mother Kiki came over and then my girlfriend Jule came over, and then and I shopped my closet and found a handful of cute summer dresses and some cardis. And a pair of sandals that if I place strategic band-aids on my winter feet are okay-ish. And I admitted to myself that at this point even in sneakers my feet hurt a lot of the time, so whatever. I’ll bring a rollerball and band-aids.
And then the three of us went shopping. We got chafe-protective undergarments. We got a couple of what my mother called, “more dignified” looking bottoms. We got another pair of even comfier sandals that do look more chic than hiking runners, especially when paired with the dignified bottoms.
And so, my brain could call this either hypocrisy — I’m a minimalist! I’m frugal! I’m #alwayssporty all the time! Or, I could tell a different story - I have the courage to change my mind. I am willing to saddle up, to gear up, for the occasion of rolling with my mother on a trip she’s sweated over planning, anticipated taking, with my kiddo, for years. And maybe sometimes, sometimes, looking the part can be part of the fun. Next stop: pedis. I’m gonna keep going.
